In Reception, our class teacher is Mrs McLarty.  Our small class size enables us to give children the focus and attention they need in order to progress quickly.

The Reception class follows on from the sound foundations developed in Pre-School.  As well as engaging in exciting play based activities, the children are introduced to more formal learning, which, is planned to follow their interests and is continually tailored to their needs.  Children in Reception learn in an active, fun way.  They are empowered to choose topics that they want to learn about, which results in self-motivated and engaged learners.

If children join our Reception class from other settings, we make sure that we get to know your child before they start school by arranging home and Pre-School visits to ensure that the transition process for your child is as smooth as possible.

Children in Reception join in with main school play times, lunch, assemblies and Mass.  They each have one or two ‘special friends’ in Year Six, who play with them at lunch time and during the year there are opportunities for ‘special friend lunches’ and a ‘mass’.  The children develop a very strong bond with their Special Friends.

Our school is ideally situated to explore the local environment and Reception children enjoy frequent learning walks. In the past these have included walks to places such as to the local Baptist Church to see the Harvest Festival; the Market; the local Library and White Leaf Cross and Brush Hill.  We also enjoy trips further afield, such as to the Airbus Discovery Centre and Amersham Field Centre.  In addition, we invite visitors to talk to the children to enhance their learning of a particular topic.  Recent visitors have included an RAF Officer; an author and members of different religions.

We work in close partnership with the Year One teacher, Mrs Aggett, to ensure that the children’s transition to Year One is as smooth as possible.  By the Trinity term in Reception the children will experience many more adult directed tasks as they prepare for their transition to Year One.
