Our Year Six class teacher is Mrs Wynne.
Year Six is a very special time in the education of a St. Teresa’s School pupil. It is in Year Six that pupils take on further responsibilities and are awarded certain privileges as leaders in their school environment. With that in mind, the academic year starts with their Induction Mass. It is at this mass that the pupils are awarded their Stewardship roles where they pledge to give of their time, talent and treasure for the good of others.
In addition to these privileges, Year Six take on the additional responsibility of caring for a child in the Reception class. They become ‘Special friends’ with one another and often these special bonds last well beyond St. Teresa’s years. They share lunches, Masses and other occasions together and it is a truly special time for the children.
Academic rigour persists throughout Year Six. The children are prepared for all or some of the following: Transfer Tests in September, Common Entrance tests for entry into independent secondary schools - usually taken sometime between October and January – and SATs in May. All children spend some time visiting prospective senior schools, both state and independent, and interviews and applications abound. Some children enter for scholarships; we have a good record of drama as well as sporting scholarships received and academic awards too.
It is also a time of great adventure where trips are linked to topics taught across the curriculum; such trips always include an annual residential trip to France, before which the pupils begin to correspond with their French pen pal that they will meet during their trip.
Relationship and Sex education takes place in the Trinity term Year Six. This is a six hour programme which focuses on both the physical and spiritual side of sex education through the teachings of the church.
There is also a great emphasis on the transition process from Year Six to Year Seven; the class teacher spends her time preparing the pupils to become more independent so that they can transfer more easily to their new setting; examples of this include managing homework requirements, being aware of timetabling commitments and teacher expectations. Several workshops are held and external visitors are invited to talk to the pupils in their final term at St.Teresa’s to guide and advise them on their journey ahead.
