Our Year One class teacher is Miss Craker, with Mrs Aggett teaching on a Thursday.
Our children are well prepared for the transition from the EYFS into Year One. During their final term in our Reception Class, staff plan many opportunities for the children to familiarise themselves with Year One life. In Year One, we recognise and build upon the skills that have been nurtured in the EYFS, to further support the children in becoming effective learners. A carefully planned curriculum with a wide array of topics helps to foster their self-motivation, independent thinking and enthusiasm for learning.
Literacy is integral to all subjects, giving children the opportunity to use their reading, writing and language skills across the curriculum. The children look forward to their daily handwriting sessions, which incorporate a mixture of practical fine-motor skills activities alongside more formal handwriting practice. Having consolidated how to correctly form their letters, the children are now learning how to write in a cursive script.
The children are involved in practical, fun and engaging daily activities to develop the initial building blocks needed for mathematical thinking, reasoning and problem-solving. They learn lots of practical strategies to support them in their workings and are encouraged to consider how mathematics applies to their everyday lives.
We cover a varied and interesting choice of topics throughout the year, which enable the children to become fully immersed in their learning. We begin the year exploring the weather with our ‘Splendid Skies’ topic, and later become history detectives when we investigate what life was like before we were born.
Later in the year we make the most of our local area by exploring the local woodland, in our ‘Enchanted Woodland’ topic, which involves building miniature dens and constructing mini-woodlands from natural materials. Our design skills are developed further in ‘Paws, Claws and whiskers’, where we design our own zoo, read famous animal fables and look at different habitats around the world.
We end our year with a ‘Bright Lights, Big City’ topic, which enables us to use maps and research to locate Buckingham Palace, understand compass directions, plan routes around London and learn about the countries of the United Kingdom.
