EYFS: Reception and Pre-school

As children learn rapidly in the first five years of their lives, in St Teresa’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we provide children with the rich opportunities they need to explore, investigate and discover.

At St Teresa’s, in the EYFS, children acquire the skills that they need to become effective learners, gain the knowledge and understanding that they need to make sense of the world and are given time to apply their learning in their play. As a result, they become self-motivated, independent thinkers with a real enthusiasm for life and a love for learning.

As a Catholic school we make time for children’s spiritual development. The children learn to be reflective, caring and thoughtful, to appreciate the natural world and to love life.

In the early years of life, children learn from everything they see, hear and do. The EYFS provides a Statutory Framework that comprises three prime areas of learning and four specific areas of learning.  Our experienced staff work within this Framework; skilfully adapting and tailoring it to each child’s unique needs.  For more information click here.  See also What to expect, When.

Creating Effective Learners

At St Teresa’s, children are supported to develop the characteristics that will enable them to become effective, lifelong learners.  Children in St Teresa’s EYFS are motivated, engaged and learn to think creatively and critically.  Each child is encouraged to develop a ‘can do’ approach to learning, where ideas can be tested, measured risks can be taken, opinions will be listened to and where efforts as well as achievements are recognised and celebrated. This ensures that they have fun, enjoy learning and love school.

Dynamic Teaching

St Teresa’s EYFS offers a personalised education.  Our belief that each child is unique means that we plan exciting activities and experiences that start from the children’s interests and meet each child’s needs.  Our knowledge of child development and learning and small class sizes ensures that children make rapid progress and enjoy their time with us. Our indoor and outdoor learning environments provide a range of exciting and challenging opportunities and many open-ended resources that enable children to develop their thinking skills and play creatively.  Our experienced staff (our most important resource) encourage, observe and support the children as they play, making sure that they are taught the skills that they need to progress and are engaged and motivated to learn.

Parent Partnerships

In St Teresa’s EYFS, we believe that working in partnership with parents and carers is essential and a fundamental aspect of our practice. Even before your child joins the school, we will work closely with you to ensure that we provide a loving, supporting environment in which your child can feel safe, happy and confident.  We offer home visits so that you have the opportunity to share your expert knowledge of your child with us and can help us to understand what they need and how we can support them. Once at school, we continually share information via feedback at the start and end of the day, a home school link book and regular newsletters.

We use the online journal Tapestry to give you frequent information about your child’s achievements at school, which gives parents a real insight into their child’s experiences and progress at St Teresa’s.  We also encourage parents to share news of children’s learning at home.

Please also see the attached Guidance for Parents on promoting positive behaviour in young children.
