We have been supporting the Tanzania Charity, which is run by two parishioners of St Teresa of the Child Jesus, our parish church. The charity provides educational sponsorship and equipment for schools as well as vocational training. Mrs Herta Walser came to school to give an interesting talk and show some slides of the children and schools they support in Tanzania.
The children are raising money by donating pocket money and sponsored events such as running around the school playground. The School Council representatives are asking their classes to decide how they would like to raise funds for the charity and we will have a whole week of different fundraising events.
Earlier in the year we had fun with Maths as well as raising money for the NSPCC on Number Day. We spent a whole day solving mathematical problems and the children even came to school wearing a problem, which other people could try to solve! We thought about the million children that the NSPCC have helped and wrote a prayer for a child on “paper people”, which were then joined together into long chains and used to decorate the Christmas tree.
Last term we had a Lent Mini Sale to raise money for CAFOD, whose campaign ‘Make a Splash’ is raising money for water projects overseas. Representatives from CAFOD gave a talk about their work in Assembly and also a Workshop for Years Five and Six, to enable the children to understand what having access to clean water can mean to communities.
